For the casual hockey goalie, buying ice hockey goalie equipment can be a very frustrating process due to the costs associated with buying the protective equipment that you need to stand in the net and face slap shots from other ice hockey players. I think that it is a common misconception that goalie equipment is not good unless it is brand new. This misconception could not be further from the truth.

Though I play defense in hockey now, I actually spent most of my years of youth hockey playing goaltender. While there were years where I would have brand new ice hockey goalie pads, most of my years of playing goalie saw me wearing used goalie equipment. A lot of times I would sport some pro return goalie equipment which was not only much cheaper than brand new gear, but also was of a high quality and came broken in the day that they were purchased. If I were still playing goalie today, I would definitely avoid buying brand new goalie gear and instead I would opt to buy used hockey goalie equipment.

The problem with preferring used goalie equipment is the fact that it can be hard to find good places to decent used goaltender gear. If you live in a large city that has a bit of a hockey background you might be able to find a hockey pro shop that sells new and used goaltender gear, but for those of us who do not live in towns with an abundance of ice hockey stores this is not necessarily an option. This is why the internet is so great, there are quite a few hockey equipment websites out there that sell new and used goalie equipment and the process of buying the new gear is usually relatively painless. Another great option is to visit auction or classifieds websites like Craigslist or Ebay where you can find a large amount of people looking to sell their old hockey goalie gear.

If you are hesitant to start playing goalie due to the horror stories you have heard about the cost of hockey goalie equipment, you should definitely consider researching and finding some quality used hockey equipment that is no more than a few years old. You will find that you can save hundreds of dollars by avoiding paying for the high priced brand new hockey goalie equipment and instead taking the used route which has more benefits than just a good price. The way I look at buying used goalie gear is that I basically am saving money to have someone else break in my goalie leg pads and my hockey goalie gloves.

If you are an aspiring hockey goaltender, or if you have a child who is thinking that they might want to give goalie a try, you probably cringe when you think about what it will cost in order to buy all of the protective gear needed to play goalie safely. The fact of the matter is that many people who try goalie become instantly addicted to the position, but also many completely dislike it and decide to quite after playing goaltender for a year or less. For this reason it is a good idea to not buy brand new and instead buy used hockey goalie equipment for yourself or your child.

It is true that playing goalie can literally cost a fortune, but if you know how to go about buying used hockey goalie gear you can really save money and avoid spending an arm and a leg to play a position that you are not even quite sure if you are serious about yet, you need to try some cheap goalie equipment while you are feeling out whether or not goalie is right for you. Luckily many goaltenders sell the goalie gear that they have outgrown to their local hockey equipment store or online at some of the popular auction websites. I should mention that buying used goalie equipment is always a better idea when you can try it on first. A lot of hockey players and goalies make the mistake of buying the wrong piece of equipment online because they never got to try on the gear prior to spending their hard earned money on their goalie equipment.

Many hockey players won’t settle for any thing less than brand new hockey equipment, but if you can’t afford to do that buying used hockey goaltender equipment is not anything to be ashamed of. Obviously you will spend less money on the used pieces of equipment that you buy, but you will also be able to avoid the dreadful breaking in of the pads you buy. When you buy used hockey goalie equipment there are also some things you can do to repair or recondition the pads to make them more durable and less likely to break down on you.

If you want to buy used goalie gear, you should do some research on what exactly you are looking for and the going rate for a brand new version of the piece of equipment you are going to buy so that you know how much you should offer for the used hockey goalie equipment if you have the option to barter.

If you are looking to start playing ice hockey, but you are on a tight budget, or if you already play hockey and you need to purchase some gear but don’t have a lot of money to put toward it you should definitely consider purchasing some used hockey equipment. The great thing about hockey is that you will find a lot of hockey players that always have to have the newest, latest and greatest hockey gear. These players end up buying new pieces of equipment every year, which means that each year they are looking to sell their old equipment, which is usually in great shape because it is only a year old.

If you don’t mind having slightly used ice hockey equipment, you can really score some great deals on high quality items. The other benefit of purchasing used equipment for forwards or even used hockey goalie equipment is that you get to skip the dreadful process of breaking in the equipment that you are purchasing. It can be very annoying and difficult to break in some hockey gear, so purchasing used hockey gear that is one to two years old can be ideal for hockey players who are like me that hate to break in new ice hockey equipment.

You might be curious where the best place is to find used hockey equipment for sale, and to be honest, this gear is not all that hard to find if you know where to look. The internet is a great place to look for used ice hockey gear. Auction sites like Ebay and Craigslist are ideal for situations where you would need to save money and buy used equipment. Also, you might not think it, but a lot of hockey shops have plenty of used equipment for you to choose from as well. Often times hockey shops take trade ins and end up selling used hockey equipment, though it probably won’t be front and center in the shop, if you look around, you should be able to peruse the shop and find sections where you can get used gear.

Though hockey is an expensive sport, there are obviously things you can do to save some money. Buying used ice hockey equipment is much easier than you might think. If you don’t mind using equipment that somebody else has used, you will end up having a huge selection of discount hockey equipment at your disposal, allowing you to play hockey on a limited budget.
