The ice hockey goalie mask has come a very long way in recent years. When you really stop to think about it, it is shocking that only twenty to thirty years ago, goaltenders in hockey did not have near the protection for their faces and heads that they do today. What is even more shocking than that is the fact that goalies used to not even wear masks at all. Luckily for goaltenders and the game of hockey the ice hockey goalie mask has emerged as one of the most well thought out and engineered pieces of hockey goalie equipment. If hockey goalie masks were not what they are today, it would probably be pretty difficult to find anybody to stand in the net and take slap shots all practice or all game long.

Today the ice hockey goalie masks that are being manufactured by companies like Warwick, Itech, etc. are made using composite materials in order to allow each mask to withstand the force of even the hardest slap shots taken by the best professional hockey players. Some hockey goalie masks actually use kevlar which is what bullet proof vests are made out of. If you ever wonder why goalies in the National Hockey League do not flinch when they take slap shots from the likes of the Boston Bruins captain, Zdeno Chara, the reason why they don’t duck is because they know that they are well protected by their hockey goalie helmets and masks.

Now we know that the outer shell of the hockey goalie mask is made up of composite materials, however, you might be wondering what is the cage of the goalie mask made of? Well if you want to make sure that your cage can stand up to the hardest slap shots out there, you probably want to consider purchasing a cage made of titanium. This material is by far the strongest and most difficult to bend out of all of the other materials that hockey goalie cages are made out of. It should however be noted that unless you are playing at a very high level of hockey where players have incredibly hard shots, the titanium goalie cage might not be necessary, but it doesn’t hurt to be on the safe side.

If you or your child is a hockey goaltender, it is important that you make sure that you purchase an ice hockey goalie mask that is of a high quality. You never want to sacrifice safety just to get a good deal. There are too many head injuries being had each year, and a quality goalie mask will help make sure that you are safe while you play even the most elite hockey players with very hard shots.

One of the best parts about playing goalie in ice hockey is the fact that they get to wear such unique goalie equipment. However, out of all the great gear that goalies get to wear, the most popular item in the goaltender’s hockey bag though is the hockey goalie mask. There are many hockey players that can tell you that they made the switch from forward to goalie because they wanted to wear the goalie equipment and more specifically the hockey goaltender masks.

The reason why ice hockey goalie masks are so popular with hockey players and fans alike, is due to the fact that they are so customizable due to the ability to deck them out with incredibly elaborate paint jobs. While many amateur hockey goalies in youth hockey leagues and adult hockey leagues might not be able to afford the amazing paint jobs that you see on National Hockey League goaltenders today. The paint jobs that you see on hockey goalie masks on television and at professional hockey games would cost the average goaltender thousands of dollars, so obviously it is not a surprise that you do not see the high quality elaborate paint jobs in amateur leagues due to the fact that many people simply cannot afford it.

The good news is that there are alternatives for goaltenders who want a decent paint job, but can’t afford it. Some hockey goalie mask manufacturers actually sell masks with painted designs already on them. Sometimes the pre-painted goalie masks will have replicas of paint jobs that certain NHL goaltenders have had, and some of them come with a generic design that still looks great. Another option for goalies that want their masks painted for an affordable price is to go out and find an amateur air brush artist or painter that is willing to paint a mask at an affordable price. You can also take your mask to an auto body shop and see if you could get a pin stripe design, which would probably be quite affordable and you can be sure it gets done right because they would know how to finish the mask with a clear coat properly.

Painted hockey goalie masks are getting more and more elaborate each year, and the professional goalies that get custom masks made to suit their personality are getting more creative each year as well. I have always enjoyed seeing professional goalies masks, but these days the paint jobs are starting to blow my mind because they are amazing works of art.

The hockey goalie mask is an icon in the sport of hockey. While most people who think of the goalie mask usually initially think of Jason form the Friday The Thirteenth horror movies, the hockey goalie mask has evolved much since the days when goaltenders wore the Jason style of mask. Starting in the 1950s and continuing all the way through the early 1980s, the goalie mask was a basic face plate with holes in it. However, after the evolution of hockey and the improvement of hockey players shots, there was a revelation that this type of goalie mask was not safe enough for the style of hockey that had emerged in recent years.

Then for a while, goalies were wearing the classic helmet and cage duo, similar to what Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings still wears today. This helmet provided sufficient protection to protect the face and skull, whereas the previous ice hockey goalie mask really only protected the face and a portion of the back of the head. This helmet and cage duo is still preferred by some goalies today because these goalies feel that they have improved peripheral vision and they just are not comfortable with the new style of hockey goalie masks that most of the goalies wear today.

The most common goalie mask nowadays is a bit of a hybrid between the first Jason style of goalie mask and the helmet/cage duo. Most professional, amateur and even youth hockey league goalies wear this type of hybrid goalie mask. The great thing about the new version of goalie masks is that they are ideal for paint jobs. Today’s hockey goalie masks are being painted with amazingly elaborate goalie mask paint jobs that allow each goalie to express their personalities through their mask’s custom paint job. If you can not afford a custom paint job, there are several goalie mask manufacturers, like Itech, that allow you to purchase a pre-painted goalie mask.

Today’s masks have come an incredibly long way over the past ten to twenty years, and I think that I can honestly say that the manufacturers have perfected the art and craft of the goalie mask in a way that I don’t really think that masks will be changing much in the future, because the design of the mask is pretty much flawless.
