If you have never played ice hockey before you might be wondering what hockey players have to wear when it comes to protective equipment and ice hockey pads. Being new to ice hockey you probably want to make sure that you are protected sufficiently against what is considered a fairly dangerous sport due to the speed at which it is played and the fact that you are allowed to body check. Obviously you do not want to buy the most inexpensive pieces of hockey equipment just to save money because often times the cheapest hockey equipment available can put hockey players at the highest risk for injury.

The very most important piece of ice hockey equipment is the hockey helmet. For obvious reasons the hockey helmet is something that you should not mind spending extra money on to get the highest quality available. Without a doubt the most common injury in hockey is the concussion, and that applies to both your most basic amateur hockey league as well as your most advanced professional hockey league. Concussions can happen many ways, and you want do whatever you can do to help prevent getting concussions, including getting the most padded hockey helmet, some sort of face protection and wearing a mouth guard.

The rest of the ice hockey pads that hockey players wear consist of shoulder pads, shin pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, hockey gloves and a protective cup of some sort. Though these pads are incredibly important to prevent severe bruises and injury, some hockey players and hockey parents alike decide to sacrifice protection for an affordable price. This is not a good idea to say the least. If you can’t afford to pay for the proper hockey equipment you should make sure to wait until you can afford sufficient ice hockey pads before ever stepping onto the ice.

Shopping for ice hockey pads can be difficult, especially if you have never done it before, so you should probably do a good amount of research online to help you get acquainted with what the best brands and models are for each and every piece of ice hockey gear that you wear. Once you have gone through the process of buying hockey equipment a few times, you will start to get a feel for what type of equipment will work the best for you in your particular situation and skill level. Soon enough you will be able to find affordable ice hockey pads relatively quickly by knowing when and where you should shop for your ice hockey gear.

Sufficient hockey pads are essential for any hockey player. Obviously ice hockey is a fast sport with a high percentage of injuries compared to most sports. Even if you do not play hockey in a check hockey league you need to make sure that your are well protected. There are so many ways hockey players get injured so even though you might think you want to just go out and purchase the cheapest ice hockey pad possible, more often than not this is not a good decision.

Ice hockey equipment brands build their products in tiers, there are usually several tiers for each piece of equipment and each one is priced according to the quality of which the product was built. For example, with hockey gloves, Bauer might have 3 or 4 different pairs of gloves in a particular size, and if you cannot afford anything else, you can purchase the cheapest pair, but you should be aware of the fact that the cheap pair will often not last you as long because the palm might not be of a high quality and might get holes really quickly. Taking a look and comparing the cheap pair of gloves with one of the more expensive pairs of gloves, you can immediately see that you will be better protected and the quality of craftsmanship on the higher tier glove is superior to the cheap glove. In the long run you might actually end up spending the same amount of money on gloves because you would need to replace or repair the cheap glove several times before you would ever have any problems with the more expensive higher quality glove. This applies to almost any product for hockey pads as well.

Don’t get me wrong, I do realize that hockey is a very expensive sport, and sometimes you just can not afford to purchase the top of the line product for any piece of hockey gear, and usually the less expensive brand will provide sufficient protection as long as you are not playing at an extremely high level of hockey. So if you can’t afford the top of the line gear, you can do a bit of research online to read some reviews about a product which you are thinking of purchasing and if there aren’t any negative reviews of the piece of equipment than you might as well give it a shot and buy it because having any equipment is better than having no equipment.

Shopping for ice hockey equipment can be difficult, especially if you or your child are new to hockey. Not only is purchasing equipment quite expensive when compared to most other sports, but there are also so many items that you need to purchase that it can make shopping for adult and youth hockey equipment very hard.

If you are about to venture out into the hockey world and need help purchasing equipment you might want to consider the following tips:

1. Research as much about hockey equipment as you can online. I’m not necessarily saying that you will want to purchase your hockey gear online, but the great thing about the advancement of technology and the internet is that there are so many websites where everyday customers such as yourself can review pretty much any product under the sun. If you are looking for a certain piece of equipment all you really need to do to get a good idea of what are the best quality products and brands is do a simple search in your desired search engine, for example do a search for “hockey glove reviews”, and you should find several resources to help you in your search for the perfect pair of hockey gloves.

2. Go to your local hockey shop. Don’t be shy, go drop by your nearest hockey equipment store and talk with the employees there. Surely they will have plenty of experience playing hockey, thus they will have experience with wearing hockey equipment and they are usually happy to share there thoughts to help you.

3. Always make sure that you try on the equipment before you buy it. The only problem with purchasing hockey equipment online is that you never know exactly how the equipment that you are buying is going to fit. Hockey skates can be a particularly difficult thing to purchase online because the sizes and widths can run a bit different depending on the brand. If you do purchase online you can usually return the item if it doesn’t work out, but its still a hassle that could have been prevented by trying the piece of equipment on at a hockey store.

Though purchasing hockey equipment might seem intimidating for someone new to hockey, it really isn’t that confusing if you just spend a little bit of time researching the products.
