For many hockey teams and hockey players, buying ice hockey socks consists of choosing between many different materials of hockey socks. Unlike in years past when the only socks that were available for covering your hockey shin pads were of the heavy knitted variety, these days ice hockey sock manufacturers are coming up with some better solutions for some lighter weight options for hockey players.

A few years ago knit hockey socks saw a new material to compete with them for the ice hockey socks market. A light weight mesh material entered the scene and paved the way for ice hockey equipment manufacturers to test out new materials and see how they are received by hockey players. This light weight mesh material was very similar to what we have seen in hockey jerseys for many years. These ice hockey socks are good for people who do not like the heavy weight material used in knit socks and they do not soak up nearly as much sweat and water when you fall, which is a good thing. However, with the added convenience of these mesh ice hockey socks, there is also a downside in that they are not nearly as durable. These socks do not stretch much and they tend to tear relatively easily.

After the mesh hockey socks hit the market, a new material of sock has entered the scene that is more of a hybrid between the mesh and knit hockey socks. These socks are made by brands such as Easton, RBK and CCM, and they are a tiny bit thicker than the mesh sock but much lighter than the knit sock. Also, these socks are great because they have a bit more stretchiness to them and they don’t tear nearly as easily because they don’t have the mesh holes that you see in the super light weight hockey socks. These socks are becoming more and more popular with each year, and eventually I see the majority of ice hockey players using them all of the time.

There are also a certain number of hockey players who simply prefer the heavy weight knitted ice hockey sock for various reasons. Luckily for these people, I can see hockey equipment manufacturers always making these hockey socks because of the tradition that they carry with them. Hockey is a sport that has a lot of tradition and many people are nostalgic about the equipment and ice hockey accessories that they purchase.

Hockey socks are usually not an item that hockey players put much thought into. Most of the time if you are playing organized hockey you are provided with a few pairs of socks that match your teams uniforms, however those socks are often only to be used for games. Unless you are playing a high level of hockey where the team pays for your equipment chances are you will have to purchase your own socks for practices. That being said, I am here to dismiss the myth that all socks are created equal…this simply is not true. Up until a few months ago I was wearing the traditional knit ice hockey socks. These socks definitely have their downfalls such as the fact that they soak up water and sweat very easily. These knit socks also feel very heavy and hot compared to some of the newer socks that have recently hit the ice hockey equipment market over the last couple of years.

As I said before, just a couple of months ago I was naive to the new hockey sock style and hadn’t thought much of the fancy new socks that many of my teammates and opponents had been wearing. Then I was persuaded into trying a pair of the new RBK hockey socks that are more of a mesh material…these socks are hands down much better than the traditional knit sock and that has to be the reason why professional hockey teams, junior hockey teams and college hockey teams are using this new style of sock. The first time I slipped these socks over my shin pads, I was excited because I think that these socks look and feel much more sleek than the old fashioned sock that I had been wearing before. Also, I noticed that the sock did not collect as much water and sweat as the heavy knit hockey socks.

The fact of the matter is that ice hockey has evolved in so many ways over the last few years and with the evolution of the sport comes the evolution of the equipment. It is not a surprise to me that manufacturers are doing things to make hockey apparel like hockey socks more usable and comfortable for players. There are quite a few brands that make this new style of sock, and I am predicting that before long the old heavy knit sock will become extinct among hockey players who appreciate comfort and the superior look of a nicely made hockey sock.
