In many amateur and recreational hockey leagues a lot of players decide that they do not want to wear traditional hockey pants and they just wear sweat pants over their hockey shin pads. This is not a good idea at all for reasons which I would think are obvious to all hockey players. Taking a slap shot to the thigh or groin area without having padded hockey pants to protect you can hurt very bad, and trust me when I say that the resulting bruises that come after being victimized by the slap shot are not pretty at all.

Another reason why you do not want to bypass the wearing of ice hockey pants is because there are many occasions when you will end up falling on your tailbone, and let me tell you falling on your tailbone is incredibly painful. It does not matter how much experience you have or how good of an ice skater or hockey player you are, inevitably you will fall on your tailbone. Though hockey pants might not always completely prevent pain when you fall on your tailbone, it could mean the difference between slightly bruising your tailbone, as opposed to not wearing ice hockey pants and breaking your tailbone.

Make sure that when you are buying new or used hockey pants that they have a good amount of padding in the behind as well as plenty of padding on the front of the thighs and groin area. You do not want buy a poorly made or badly used hockey pant for obvious reasons, so do some research at your local hockey shop or even online to get a feel for what type of hockey pants might be ideal for you.

Like hockey gloves a new pair of pants can be difficult to get used to and can feel incredibly stiff. For me, there is a fine line between too little padding and too much padding in my hockey breezers. I definitely like to have plenty of padding on the front of my legs because I play defense and for some reason I get hit with a lot of shots in my thighs. I also like to have a fair amount of padding on my tailbone because if you have ever fallen hard on your tailbone you know that it can be painful and I am like most people in that I like to avoid pain as much as possible.

Other than the amount of padding, I also have to make sure that my ice hockey pants are long enough. In my opinion some of the goofiest looking hockey players are the ones that do not know that their pants are too small. Take your time when you are choosing hockey pants sizing and try them on before you buy just to make sure that you don’t make a mistake and buy the wrong size of hockey pants.

Finally, the last feature that I look for in a pair of pants for hockey is the zipper on the inside of the legs, many nhl hockey pants offer the zipper. This feature is underrated in my opinion because it is just an extra feature which can come in handy when trying to put your pants on over your skates. Also, many players actually leave the inside zippers on their hockey pant unzipped to give them more room and a looser fit which is less restrictive.

No matter what your preference is in a pair of hockey pants, you really just want to make sure that you do a bit of research on what you can afford and what will be the best pant that you can get at that price. Also, go online and check out some honest reviews of different hockey equipment brands. And finally, you need to make sure that you go to a hockey shop to try the pants on. Too many people order their gear online now, and that is okay if you know what your looking for, but if you are new to hockey you should get the advice of someone who knows.
