Ice Hockey Socks
For many hockey teams and hockey players, buying ice hockey socks consists of choosing between many different materials of hockey socks. Unlike in years past when the only socks that were available for covering your hockey shin pads were of the heavy knitted variety, these days ice hockey sock manufacturers are coming up with some better solutions for some lighter weight options for hockey players.
A few years ago knit hockey socks saw a new material to compete with them for the ice hockey socks market. A light weight mesh material entered the scene and paved the way for ice hockey equipment manufacturers to test out new materials and see how they are received by hockey players. This light weight mesh material was very similar to what we have seen in hockey jerseys for many years. These ice hockey socks are good for people who do not like the heavy weight material used in knit socks and they do not soak up nearly as much sweat and water when you fall, which is a good thing. However, with the added convenience of these mesh ice hockey socks, there is also a downside in that they are not nearly as durable. These socks do not stretch much and they tend to tear relatively easily.
After the mesh hockey socks hit the market, a new material of sock has entered the scene that is more of a hybrid between the mesh and knit hockey socks. These socks are made by brands such as Easton, RBK and CCM, and they are a tiny bit thicker than the mesh sock but much lighter than the knit sock. Also, these socks are great because they have a bit more stretchiness to them and they don’t tear nearly as easily because they don’t have the mesh holes that you see in the super light weight hockey socks. These socks are becoming more and more popular with each year, and eventually I see the majority of ice hockey players using them all of the time.
There are also a certain number of hockey players who simply prefer the heavy weight knitted ice hockey sock for various reasons. Luckily for these people, I can see hockey equipment manufacturers always making these hockey socks because of the tradition that they carry with them. Hockey is a sport that has a lot of tradition and many people are nostalgic about the equipment and ice hockey accessories that they purchase.
