Hockey Goalie Helmet
There are a few National Hockey League goalies today that still prefer the hockey goalie helmet cage combo over the ever popular goalie mask. Goaltenders like Chris Osgood of the Detroit Redwings and Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins have not taken to the new style of hockey goalie masks that so many goalies at all levels are wearing today. Though some people might think these goalies are crazy not to want the fancy new mask, I can definitely relate to their resistance to change what they are used to, and what has worked for them for so many years. Why fix something that isn’t broken right?
When you look at the goalies that do not wear the common goalie mask, it looks as though they might be vulnerable to injury, but these ice hockey goalie helmets actually are usually just as protective as the goalie mask as long as you have a few key features for protection. First, I definitely think that any ice hockey goalie helmet or mask should have a titanium cage. I have seen cheaply made goalie cages that have caved in on the goaltender’s face after a slap shot and it wasn’t pretty. Titanium cages for goalies are pretty common these days, and while they might be a bit expensive, I would definitely have to say it is well worth the price to prevent serious injury.
Another necessary accessory for the hockey goalie helmet is the plastic neck protector that hangs over the goalies throat. This neck protector should be worn by any goaltender, whether they wear a goalie helmet or goalie mask, but the helmet and cage combo wearing goaltender has less protection over their throat than the mask wearing goalie, so if you wear the helmet and cage combo do not overlook the importance of the hanging throat protector. At first these throat protectors are very annoying because they are very load when they clank against the cage, but after just a couple of games or practices with the throat protector attached to your hockey goalie helmet, you will be used to it in no time.
