Depending on what you prefer in terms of ice hockey equipment manufacturers, you might stick with the same type of hockey helmet throughout your hockey playing days. Not much more than ten years ago there were really only a few options in terms of ice hockey helmets to choose from. You had your run of the mill CCM, Bauer and occasionally you would find Jofa hockey helmets at your local hockey pro shop in North America. Sure each brand had a few different models to choose from, but on the whole there were not nearly as many options for head protection as there are today.

Now when you go to an ice rink and look at the hockey players on the ice you can see youth and adult hockey players wearing not only CCM, Bauer and Jofa helmets, but you can also see hockey players wearing the Mission hockey helmet, RBK hockey helmet and even Easton helmets. When Mission first entered the market they focused mainly on providing protective equipment to roller hockey players, but as a few years past they decided to enter the ice hockey equipment market and have done pretty well. There are even a few National Hockey League players that are sponsored by Mission. Mission hockey helmets have a very distinct look compared to its competition. When you first take a look at the Mission hockey helmet you may be put off by its looks and you might be of the opinion that their helmets are ugly. While I definitely have to agree that Mission ice hockey helmets are somewhat ugly, I am going to go out on a limb and assume that these helmets are very comfortable and they are also incredibly protective which is all you really want in a helmet.

If you can get past the initial look of the Mission hockey helmet, you might find that these are actually very well made helmets that can compare to the comfort of the old Jofa hockey helmets that former professional hockey players like Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Peter Forsberg used to wear. Too many players these days worry too much about looking cool and the consequences of looking cool while playing hockey can potentially cause severe injuries to hockey players. You might consider doing a bit of research on hockey helmets and which ones offer the best protection, I am not 100% sure, but I would guess that Mission hockey helmets are up there in terms of being one of the most protective hockey helmets that you can spend your money on. These hockey helmets made by Mission might be a little bit difficult to find at your local pro shop, but luckily today we have the internet and many hockey equipment websites that sell all sorts of different ice hockey equipment, I’m sure that after a few minutes of surfing on the web you can find a place where you can buy your own Mission ice hockey helmet.

Many hockey players and hockey parents alike do not fully understand the importance of quality hockey helmets. Sure, most people realize that concussions happen in hockey and that there is always the potential for injury when playing such a fast paced and physical game, but what they often fail to realize is that all helmets are definitely not created equal. Most cheap hockey helmets offer less padding than is needed to prevent head injuries in most instances in ice hockey. If you are going to choose one piece of ice hockey equipment to spend some extra money on it should definitely be your hockey helmet.

Most players think that it will never happen to them, but there are definitely instances, or accidents so to speak, that end up altering peoples brains and lives drastically. There are an astonishing amount of serious head injuries happening in all levels of ice hockey each and every year, and the fact of the matter is that quality ice hockey helmets could have prevented a lot of them. Cheap hockey helmets are not necessarily always inexpensive, some people that are new to ice hockey simply do not realize where the best place is to buy good hockey equipment. There are many sporting good shops that offer a limited amount of ice hockey gear, but most of these sporting good stores do not carry the quality hockey equipment necessary to adequately protect hockey players. Always shop for your hockey equipment at a specialized ice hockey pro shop.

Resist the temptation to spend less money and buy a cheap ice hockey helmet because it is much more important to spend some extra money rather than risk serious injury that could happen at any time while playing ice hockey. Some brands of hockey helmets that of are a decent quality are the top tier models in brands like CCM, Bauer, and RBK. Your best bet to identify what the best hockey helmets that you should buy would be to do some online research regarding cheap ice hockey helmets and the alternative which are quality helmets. There are some websites out there that will review different types of hockey equipment, and identifying the cheapest hockey helmets in terms of quality could take some time, but after a while you will see exactly what the best types of hockey helmets are out there for you or your hockey playing child. Always think of safety ahead of saving money when it comes to protecting your head.

Although you do not see many professional hockey players sporting Jofa hockey helmets these days, many of the die hard hockey fans have fond memories of past hockey players who were recognized by the Jofa that they wore on their heads. This is not to say that Jofa helmets are not being used today, but there has definitely been a drop off in the amount of ice hockey players who wear Jofa helmets due to the increase in hockey equipment manufacturers over the last decade or so.

Today many of the hockey players that I play with in the beer leagues either wear the old school Jofa helmet that legendary players like Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Esa Tikkanen used to wear, and there are also countless other adult hockey league players who are in search of that type of Jofa ice hockey helmet for themselves. These helmets have quite the nostalgic feel to them, but it is also important to realize that these helmets offer little to no protection from concussions in certain situations. If you are casually playing in a non-check ice hockey league this type of helmet should suffice as long as you are a skilled hockey player, but by no means should you wear these types of Jofa hockey helmets if you are new to hockey or if you play in a full contact ice hockey league.

There are however, a few more types of Jofa ice hockey helmets available that do offer more protection than the old school Gretzky style Jofa hockey helmet. Do you remember the Jofa helmet that Mario Lemieux used to wear? It was a rounder, more protective version of the Jofa Wayne Gretzky used to wear. You might not know it but some goalies actually used to wear this type of helmet. Tomas Soderstrom of the New York Islanders from years back had quite the setup in terms of Jofa goalie helmet and mask combo. The fact that a National Hockey League goaltender used to wear this Jofa ice hockey helmet is evidence enough that this helmet should offer sufficient protection and can be compared to some of the best hockey helmets being made today.

Although it seems that Jofa helmets are usually worn by European hockey players today, these helmets have a classic look that bring back fond memories to hockey fans of yesteryear. I always enjoy seeing a player who wears these types of hockey helmets in the leagues that I play in because it reminds me of the days when Wayne and Mario were the super stars of the league…that era of professional hockey is looked on as the glory days of hockey for players of my generation.

If you are a hockey parent you have probably experienced the feeling of worry that comes with your child playing a dangerous sport such as hockey. This is not to say that your child is not safe while playing ice hockey. But with the nature of the sport being full contact and being played at a fast pace, there are always going to be injuries to hockey players of all ages. That being said, there are some things that you can do to make sure that you decrease the percentage of injuries that your child gets throughout his or her hockey playing days. However, one thing you can do really stands out above all, and that is to make sure that your youth hockey players wear quality youth hockey helmets.

The helmet that your child wears could be essential to their safety and their future to live a normal healthy life. And even though hockey is an expensive sport, the youth hockey helmet is definitely one piece of ice hockey equipment that I would not mind paying a hefty price for. When buying youth hockey helmets, you really want to make sure that the helmet has plenty of padding in it, the thicker the padding the more well protected your child’s head will be. Another thing to look for in children’s hockey helmets are that they fit your child’s head well. You never want to buy a helmet that is too big with hopes that your child will have room to grow into a helmet that is just a little bit too loose now. That is a huge mistake and you could potentially put your child in danger just to save a few dollars and avoid having to buy a new helmet next year which definitely is not smart.

Do some hockey helmet research online and you will quickly find that there are some very good helmets available and there are also some helmets being sold that simply do not provide the right amount of protection to keep your child safe and to give you piece of mind while they play the physical sport of hockey. Wearing the cage tight to the face and keeping their youth hockey helmet chin strap tight to their chin can also help reduce your child’s risk of a head injury. A person can only sustain a certain amount of concussions and that number is usually pretty low for most people, so keeping your child out of harm’s way early on in their hockey playing career will allow for them to enjoy playing the sport that they love for many years to come. Stressing safety early on in a youth hockey player’s life, will teach your child to respect the sport of hockey which will help them to keep themselves safe and the teammates that they play safe.

When it comes to being a hockey player, the equipment you wear is essential to prevent injury and keep you safe. Although each and every hockey player wears a lot of protective gear, nothing is more important to their safety as ice hockey helmets are. Head injuries are becoming more and more common in the game of hockey, and there are precautions that you need to take if you want to play ice hockey while limiting your risk of serious injury. Buying the right ice hockey helmet with quality padding inside is the first step, but there are definitely a few more steps that you can take if you would like to decrease your chances of getting a head injury.

Not only should you protect your head by wearing quality ice hockey helmets, you should also protect your head and your face by wearing some sort of face protection. Whether it be a half shield or a cage, you should definitely have something to protect your eyes from uncontrollable sticks and pucks that are head high. While children do not have a choice and have to wear a full face mask with their ice hockey helmet, adult hockey players have the choice of whether or not to wear any type of face protection. To me this is a no brainer, I do not care how much grief I get from opposing players about wearing a mask I want to avoid the pain and the cost of having an injury to my face while playing hockey.

Another common mistake that I see from a lot of hockey players when they buy a new ice hockey helmet is the fact that they immediately remove the ear guards from their helmets right after they get them. This doesn’t make much sense because you really can not feel the ear guards and they do not get in your way or distract you, the only thing they are there for is to add some extra protection to another important part of your head. Several professional hockey players are starting to keep the ear protection on their helmets in tact to prevent injuries to their own ears, it just makes sense.

While ice hockey helmets do a good job of preventing concussions, in order to drastically reduce your chances of getting a concussion with a hockey helmet on is to wear a good mouth guard. Many concussions that happen today are not a result of a helmet that is not protective enough, rather they happen because the player was not wearing a mouth guard which in turn allowed the smashing of their top and bottom teeth and jaws to cause the concussion. Mouth guards are essential to preventing or limiting the chances of head injuries that are becoming more and more common with each passing year.

Since hockey players started wearing helmets, there has been one hockey equipment brand that has manufactured a hockey helmet that has stood the test of time. While many hockey helmet styles have come and gone over the last twenty to thirty years, CCM hockey helmets were the first to sport a style that is now often imitated by many other hockey equipment brands.

If you have been interested in playing or watching hockey for a long time, you probably remember the old school helmets like the Jofa hockey helmet that Wayne Gretzky wore, or the Winwell helmet that Mark Messier wore. However, these old styles of hockey helmets have faded into obscurity because they could not compete with CCM hockey helmets. The CCM ice hockey helmet has a classic look that hasn’t changed much in the last twenty years. Nowadays, however CCM helmets have some competition in terms of helmet popularity, but it is obvious that the new helmets that are gaining popularity are based off of the classic CCM hockey helmet design that has been around for so long. Brands like Nike/Bauer, RBK and even Easton have hockey helmets that are very comparable to the CCM style.

When I look at hockey helmets today, I have to say that I really do prefer the CCM helmet because it has that classic look. Although all hockey helmets have changed drastically in terms of protection for preventing injuries, the look of CCM hockey helmets have hardly changed at all. They have been engineered to prevent concussions and to protect hockey players heads more than ever before, and while you might think that it would make the CCM ice hockey helmets bulkier and somewhat more “goofy” looking, this is definitely not the case.

Obviously the most important thing when it comes to ice hockey helmets is that they provide sufficient protection in the high speed, contact sport of hockey. Concussions can definitely be prevented with the use of a quality hockey helmet, and CCM hockey helmets have evolved into good looking helmets, which they always have been, that can prevent injuries because of the quality of padding and craftsmanship that goes into the manufacturing of these classic hockey helmets.

The CCM hockey helmet is great for adults and children alike, as they make many different models of helmets to fit a particular size of head. It is important to make sure that if your child is using a face mask or cage that fits their face well. CCM hockey helmets are pretty much universal when it comes to face mask and half shield compatibility, but you will probably want to do some research online or at your local hockey shop to make sure that your preferred face mask or half shield will fit on your CCM hockey helmet.

Many hockey players are very particular about the ice hockey helmet that they wear. While there are a few different brands and models of hockey helmets, most of them are very similar in their make. Bauer, CCM and RBK hockey helmets all have similar shapes and designs, and I think that the reason why is because that design and look has become accepted among the majority of hockey players and that style of ice hockey helmet looks good with or without a face mask, half shield or cage.

Back about fifteen years ago, the style of helmet for hockey was not quite as consistent as it is today. Remember when Wayne Gretzky would wear the small, almost without any padding Jofa hockey helmet? Or how about the bulkier and much more rotund Jofa helmet that Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr would wear? Then you also had the old school Winwell hockey helmets that Mark Messier would wear. Although their were some unique choices for helmets just a few decades ago, CCM revolutionized hockey helmet design and their helmet style has been copied and adapted by many other ice hockey equipment brands. Now, it is rare to see any professional hockey player wearing any different type of hockey helmet.

Currently the helmet I wear is of the Bauer variety, just because I feel like it fits my slightly misshapen head a bit better than the CCM helmet. I also like the way that my Jofa hockey cage fits on the Bauer hockey helmet. When buying ice hockey helmets for yourself or your child, the most important thing to look for is the amount of padding inside of the helmet. You never know what is going to happen out there, and even if you do not play in a check ice hockey league, you can still take a spill and hit your head, and as we all know that ice is hard, so the more padding in your helmet the safer you or your child will be.

If so, you definitely have an abundance of helmets to choose from as there is a very wide variety of brands to sift through. You don’t necessarily have to do too much research to find the best one for you, however since it is your brain that you are trying to protect, you might want to spend at least a little bit of time checking out hockey helmet reviews to make sure you are not buying a helmet that does not do its job.

I have been playing hockey for close to 30 years now and the helmet that I have worn for the majority of my playing days has been Bauers top of the line helmet. I actually recently tried on the Nike/Bauer 9500 and I have to say that will probably be the next ice hockey helmet that I am going to buy. Why do I like that helmet? Well, there are several things that I will look for when I am looking for hockey helmets.

First, I like to make sure that a helmet has sufficient padding inside, this might sound obvious, but I think that some people prefer less padding because they don’t want their helmet to feel too bulky. However, I want to make sure that I am protected and the more padding the better. I don’t play hockey professionally and I have to work for a living so I want to make sure that I am going to be able to take a hard fall and prevent any concussion that might happen with a less protective helmet.

Another thing that I really like about the Nike/Bauer 9500 is that you can adjust the size of the helmet easily without ever needing to break out a screw driver. This is a great feature and one that I actually use more often than I had anticipated. This helmet has two clips on each side that flip up and then you can push the front and back of the helmet in to make it smaller, or you can pull the front and back out to make it bigger. The hockey helmet sizing feature of the Nike/Bauer 9500 is great.

Also, though I am an adult and it is not the most popular thing in the world, I am a big supporter of hockey helmet cages to protect my face. I don’t have any illusions that I am in the NHL and I do have to go to work in the morning and I do not want to show up missing teeth or having a broken nose or even having some serious eye damage because some reckless player decided to get his stick up in my face or take a slap shot that he can’t control. My point is that I need a helmet that fits well with my Jofa cage, and believe it or not there are some helmets that don’t work as well with certain cages.

The last thing I’m looking for in a helmet is one that looks good. Yep, I know I shouldn’t care how I look, but guess what I don’t want to look ridiculous out there, and there certainly are some helmets that look better on certain people than others. So I do look for a helmet that has some of the aesthetics that I am looking for in a helmet design. However, this is the least important factor for me because it does not involve the protection of my brain.

So to sum it up, I just wanted to give out some tips on The Hockey Web about what I look for in a hockey helmet for people who do not know what to look for. I hope that you find this post helpful, but by all means, do not just take my advice on what helmet you should get, you will be much happier if you do a little bit of research online and then get an idea for some of the features you like in a helmet, then you should head down to your local hockey pro shop and try on a few of the helmets you have seen online.
