Many hockey enthusiasts and hockey players go through a hockey card collecting phase at one point or another in their lives. Ice hockey is a sport that many people become extremely passionate about as soon as they get a little taste for the glory that is hockey. You do not have to have ever played hockey in order to appreciate it, many of my good friends have never played hockey before, but the appreciate the game for many reasons and they understand the details of what appears to be a very complex sport at first glance. Collecting hockey cards is a fun and healthy hobby which if you do it for long enough can have a nostalgic effect on you when you revisit your hockey card collection years down the road.

I actually have quite the hockey card collection, all of which were collected around twenty or more years ago. The hockey cards I was always interested in obtaining were the Wayne Gretzky hockey cards. Obviously many people were fans of “The Great One”, so getting rare Gretzky hockey cards was pretty difficult, and I would imagine that it is even more difficult today. However, believe it or not, I actually owned a Wayne Gretzky rookie card when I was too young to know the value of it. Unfortunately I ended up losing track of it and do not have that card anymore, but if I did I am sure it would be worth a lot of money.

The thing about collecting hockey cards is that you should not go into it thinking that someday you will be rich when you sell your Wayne Gretzky hockey cards in the future. Most hockey cards are hardly worth anymore than you initially spent on them back in the day. The value in collecting hockey cards should be the enjoyment and satisfaction of collecting hockey cards of your favorite players of the past and present. One day when you are much older, you can look at your hockey card collection and conjure up all those memories that you had of the players that you used to look up to.

This does not necessarily mean that you can’t make any money off of your hockey card collection if in fact you do decide to sell them someday. If you happen to have a rare card of a super star hockey player such as Wayne Gretzky, and you can keep it in mint condition for many years, then you might be able to sell it and make some money off of it. For me though, I would prefer to simply hold onto that card and keep it for as long as I can and pass it down to future generations of my family, because once you have a valuable hockey card of your favorite hockey player you become somewhat attached to all of the memories that your rare hockey card represents.

If used to collect hockey cards or if you still do, you probably have spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out exactly how to preserve the best cards that you have by keeping them in mint condition. Obviously collecting hockey cards should just be considered a fun hobby, but every now and again you must think to yourself, “I wonder how much my hockey card collection is worth?” Well the answer to that is next to nothing unless you kept your hockey cards in very good shape, and the only way to do that is to put each card in its own individual plastic case or to place your hockey cards in designated hockey card boxes, and if you are really careful you might just want to do both.

In order for your hockey cards to be considered any type of investment, whether it be large or small, you have to keep your cards in mint condition for many years. Most hockey card collectors do not want to buy as many individual plastic card cases as they have hockey cards, so for that reason using hockey card boxes is much more convenient and can do a very good job at keeping your cards mint. When I was a kid I used several different types of boxes for hockey cards, but the best ones were the ones that had separate rows with which to store my hockey cards in. Usually they had about three rows that you could organize your cards in. The hockey card box was a great way to store cards that I knew I wanted to keep in good shape, but did not necessarily want to take out and look at all that often.

If for some reason you like to look at your hockey cards frequently, hockey card boxes probably are not your best option. Instead you might consider buying some hockey card books. Each of these hockey card books have many pages with separate sleeves to hold anywhere from nine to twelve cards per page. Although the hockey card book does do a decent job of keeping your cards in mint condition, there have been instances where I have damaged my hockey cards by accidentally bending a page with cards in it.

If you enjoy collecting hockey cards, you should definitely consider trying to find a good way in which to protect each of your most valuable cards. For me storing the cards in a protective area, the best option was to buy a few hockey card boxes. The simply provide the best bang for your buck when it comes to finding protection for your ice hockey cards.

If you have ever collected NHL hockey cards you probably thought of them as an investment where if you could keep them in mint condition for many years, a good hockey players card could be worth much more than when you initially purchased it. While this is a possibility, turning NHL hockey cards for a profit is actually pretty difficult.

The truth about hockey cards, and other sports cards in general, is that most of the cards that you purchased quite a few years ago will not be worth much more than a few pennies more than when you actually purchased the hockey card long ago. But, if you get the right rookie card for a superstar hockey player and you can keep it in mint condition for a few decades, you could actually turn a hefty profit by selling the hockey card at a sports memorabilia store, auction or even online.

There is however, one major factor involved in whether or not your NHL hockey card will be worth a lot at some point in the future, the most valuable ice hockey cards have to be quite rare. If for some reason you ended up getting a limited edition rookie card for Wayne Gretzky, you could now easily sell that hockey card for a lot of money right now, but if you waited another twenty or thirty years you would probably make a killing. This is just a hypothetical situation, but you never know when you might come across a rare hockey card that you should make sure not to trade away and to keep in mint condition.

If you are an avid NHL hockey card collector, you will probably want to know the value of your hockey cards buy purchasing a Beckett price guide for hockey cards. This way you can know what of you cards have the most potential to make money in the future. Obviously, you should not get into collection hockey cards because you think that they will make you rich, because the chances that you would be able to sell your cards for a lot of money in the future are slim. You should approach collecting hockey cards as a hobby that you enjoy, and if at some point down the road you make some money off of your collection then that is just an added bonus. I had a lot of fun collecting hockey cards as a child, and have never made a dime off of any of my cards, but that doesn’t really matter to me because I always enjoy being able to look through my old cards and remember back to the times when I first got those cards.

Many hockey fans have been obsessed at one time or another with the hockey card. Although many people might consider collecting hockey cards to be a hobby that only children should participate in, there are still many people that are not children that have extensive hockey card collections. When a hockey fan has spent enough time and money collecting their favorite hockey trading cards, if they can keep the rarest cards in mint condition it is possible that those hockey card values could be a lot higher than they might have known.

Certain brands of trading cards are more sought after than others. For example Upper Deck hockey cards tend to be a favorite by many hockey fans who enjoy collecting cards. The same goes for McDonald’s hockey cards which I believe are only available north of the border in Canada and only for limited times. There are also certain players whose cards are worth more simply because they are superstars in the league. If there aren’t many hockey cards made for a certain superstar, and you own one of them, if you chose to sell it online or at a sports memorabilia store you would probably get a decent amount of money for that particular card, especially if it is old. Though hockey card prices are going to vary when you go to sell them, if you have collected enough cards and kept them in good shape you will be surprised how much you can get if you do choose to sell your prized possession that you have likely been preserving since your childhood.

If you are curious about how much your cards are worth there are certain websites as well as magazines or books that can serve as a hockey card price guide. Even if you do not plan to sell your hockey card collection it is always good to know exactly how much that collection is worth.

Did you collect hockey cards as a kid? If you did and you kept them in mint condition you could probably sell them for a few bucks. When I was a kid I had hundreds, if not thousands of cards that were kept in good shape in my hockey card boxes. They were fun to collect and trade with friends. I also had the thought that all of my hockey cards were going to be worth a lot of money many years in the future. Well, twenty years later, the cards are probably not worth all that much in terms of dollars (sure I might have a few that could be sold for more than a few bucks) but the real value of the hockey cards that I had collected as a kid is the nostalgic value that they hold.

There were several NHL hockey cards that I had which I knew were worth more than the rest. For example, I had a Cam Neely (also known as Seabass) rookie card from back in the day when he was a Vancouver Canuck. I also had a Pat LaFontaine rookie card which I treasured. Believe it or not I even had what many would consider to be the holy grail of ice hockey cards…a Wayne Gretzky rookie hockey card. I was too young to understand that this was actually something that I should take care of and I either traded it, lost it or ruined it. I can’t remember because I was so young, but I do know that at one point in my life I actually did have possession of the Wayne Gretzky rookie card.

The great thing about these hockey cards is that I still have most of them, and the ones that I don’t have anymore…well, at least I can say that I did own them at one point. The beauty about hockey cards is not necessarily the fact that one day they might all be collectors items. The truth is that hockey trading cards usually are not worth all that much, and there will most likely never be a hockey card worth as much as the T206 Honus Wagner Baseball Card, which Wayne Gretzky used to be part owner of. The best reason to collect hockey cards should not be to get rich someday by selling them, you should choose to collect hockey cards because you are a fan of hockey and you simply enjoy collecting cards related to the best sport in the world.
