Buying goalie equipment for yourself can be quite a difficult task, however, buying youth goalie equipment for your child is even more difficult because you want to make sure that everything fits your child properly and that you are buying quality gear to prevent injuries from happening to your young goaltender.

If you have a child that is thinking about starting to play goalie in hockey, it is important that they understand the investment that has to be made for them to play this expensive position in what is already an expensive sport. The last thing that any parent wants to do is spend a lot of money on new youth goaltender equipment, only to find out that not long into the future their child decides to quit playing goalie. For this reason I would recommend that if your child has not played goalie ever before, see if you can borrow or rent some youth goalie gear for your child so that they can try out the position for a few practices or even games before you make the commitment of spending your hard earned money on brand new youth goalie equipment for your child. A lot of ice rinks and youth hockey associations have rental goalie gear that players can use to suit up as goalies whenever they want, and although this gear is usually pretty worn out, it should suffice when helping your child decide if goalie is the right position for them.

Once you have a good understanding of whether or not your child will want to stick with goalie, if they come to the conclusion that they like the position, then it is time to decide where and what to buy in terms of youth goalie equipment. You definitely do not want to buy your children’s goaltender gear online if it is your first time buying equipment for them. It might be tempting to buy their equipment online, but you will likely make the mistake of buying the wrong size of hockey goalie pads. Instead of buying your child’s youth hockey goalie equipment online, you should go the traditional route of finding a hockey pro shop near you and getting help from an employee who likely has experience in fitting children for ice hockey equipment as well as goaltender equipment. Make sure that you ask many questions so that you don’t make the mistake of buying a piece of goalie equipment that will not suit your child well.

Another great way to get a good feel for what you should buy in terms of junior goalie equipment is to do some research online. There are many websites out there that offer customer reviews of various pieces ice hockey gear. Buying hockey goalie equipment does not have to be as intimidating as many hockey parents without experience make it. Just take your time and make sure that your child actually is committed to playing goalie before you spend a lot of money on goalie gear, after that everything else will fall into place.

If you have a child who plays goalie in hockey, you probably dread when you have to spend even more money on goalie equipment. Obviously you want your child to be protected from injury and you do not want them to be in harms way by purchasing them sub par hockey goalie equipment. However, goalie equipment is very expensive (even more expensive than regular hockey equipment), and each year that you need to upgrade to a new piece of goaltender gear it gets more expensive.

Although the price of youth goalie gloves is probably not going to be the most expensive thing you buy for your young goalie, it also is not the least expensive either. Purchasing youth goalie gloves can be difficult however, because you have to make sure that the gloves that your child wear are protective enough to prevent injury, but you also do not want them to be wearing junior goalie gloves that are too big. When I used to coach young goaltenders, I would see so many young goalies wearing a youth catcher and youth blocker that were simply too big. While this might not seem like a big deal, it can make playing goalie much more difficult and can slow down there development. Children’s goalie gloves that are too big make it hard for that young goalie to move their hands and arms, not to mention it can be difficult for them to keep those gloves on their hands, which could potentially lead to unnecessary injuries to your child’s hands or wrists.

If you are going to be buying some new youth goalie gloves for your child, I would definitely suggest that you visit your local pro shop to purchase their gloves if you do not know exactly what size that they wear. You should allow your goaltender to try on a few different gloves in order to see what will fit the best and what they are the most comfortable with. Though you might be tempted to just purchase your youth goaltending equipment online, this would likely be a mistake if you do not have much knowledge of goalie equipment prior to making your purchase. Buying any ice hockey equipment online requires you to have a considerable amount of knowledge about hockey gear and sizes. If you are an inexperience hockey parent to a youth goaltender, do yourself a favor when you go to buy your next youth goalie glove, visit your local hockey pro shop and get your child fitted by somebody who knows how the glove should fit.

Choosing hockey gear for your child can be difficult because it is very difficult to tell what fits your child well and what doesn’t. Unless your child knows exactly how the equipment should fit, it will definitely be hard to decipher whether or not each piece of ice hockey gear fits them well or not. With youth goalie pads it can be even more difficult. Not many hockey parents have ever played goalie, so buying hockey goalie equipment is a new experience for them and their child. Youth hockey goalie equipment can be pretty expensive when compared to player’s gear, but luckily it is less expensive that the goalie equipment worn by older goaltenders.

When choosing youth goalie pads for your child, there are a few things that you want to consider. First and foremost, you want to make sure that the height of the junior goalie leg pads are sufficient for your childs height. Obviously you do not want to buy youth goaltender pads hoping that they will last your child three or four years because until they grow into those extra large pads they will be literally swimming in their goalie gear making it very difficult to move and develop their skills as a goaltender. You should keep in mind that your child will likely not fit into the youth goalie leg pads you are currently shopping for for more than a year or two tops.

You also want to make sure that your child’s goalie pads are light. These days most goaltender equipment manufacturers have figured out how to make goalie equipment light. Back in the day however, most goalie leg pads, youth and adult alike were extremely heavy and as your game or practice went on they would soak up a lot of water which would make them even heavier. Light goalie leg pads are essential for quick movement and quick recovery. Obviously you are going to want youth goaltender leg pads that have sufficient protection to keep your child from getting injured, but keep in mind that you definitely do not want heavy leg pads for your child to lug around.

All in all, buying goalie equipment for your child is extremely difficult when they are just starting, but as they play for a few years, you will start to get a handle on what exactly you and your child should be looking for in their protective equipment. Make sure that you do a little bit of research online before jumping into it, otherwise you will suffer from goaltender equipment information overload and you will likely make a mistake in the equipment that you purchase for your youth goaltender.
