Many people that do not have much experience playing and/or watching ice hockey do not realize that ice hockey goalie skates are much different than that of the hockey skates the forwards wear in hockey. I think that a lot of inexperienced hockey players that want to play goalie do not realize exactly how different ice hockey goaltender skates really are.

One of the major differences between the two different positions skates is that the hockey goalie skate has a much flatter blade. This means that there is more of the skate blades surface area that is touch the ice. Forward hockey skates usually have a bigger rocker when you compare them to goalie skates. Not only are goalie skate blades longer and flatter, but the hollow on ice hockey goalie skates is usually set to be a bit more shallow when you get the skates sharpened. The feel that you get when you skate with a goalie skate is much different than you would get with forward skates, but these goaltender skates are made like this for good reason, because it really allows the goalie to move and skate they way that they need to in order to be successful.

Not only are the skate blades on goaltender skate much different, but the cut of the skate seems quite a bit different too. When you compare the two different types of ice hockey skates, you will notice that the forward skate seems to have more ankle support as they rise higher, but goalie skates are almost a low-top version of forward skates. Much of the support in the legs and ankles that goalies get come from the skates, but support also comes from the goalie pads. In order for the goalie leg pads to fit more comfortably it seems that goalie skates are cut lower to accommodate for the way the pads sit on the foot.

Finally, the other main difference between the two types of ice hockey skates is the way that ice hockey goaltender skates offer much more in terms of protection. Goaltenders take a lot of shots to the front and sides of the feet and to protect against foot injuries goalie skates come with a white or black shell which can help to prevent hurting your foot. While a lot of hockey players who are not goalies would argue that they might take more shots off of their foot, especially defensemen, the reason why forwards do not have the added protection on their skates is because it is not practical and would slow the player down with the added weight and bulk.

If you are thinking about giving goalie a try, I would definitely recommend that you borrow a pair of hockey goaltender skates from somebody you know who plays goalie. It can be quite a shock when you switch from forward to goalie skates and quite honestly you might find that the difference in the way that the two types of skates are might be enough to persuade you to keep playing forward in ice hockey.

Some people that are new to hockey do not realize that hockey goalie skates are completely different than normal hockey skates. The goalie skate is a very finely tuned piece of goalie equipment that is necessary when playing goalie at just about any level of hockey. Skates for goalies not only provide more protection to prevent broken toes and such, but they also have a completely different blade that allows goalies more flexibility to move laterally than the normal player skates have.

Many people think that goalies just stand there and do not have to be very good at skating because they do not move very much, however anyone who thinks this is completely wrong. Goalies need to be just as good, if not better skaters than the other players on the team. Though they don’t have to cover as much ground during a game as the forwards or defense do, goalies must be able to transition from forward to backward to sideways at the drop of a hat. Goalie is all about reactions and making sure that you can get from one spot to another as quickly as possible. Diving around and losing control of your positioning is definitely not the answer to get to the puck most of the time. Usually the hockey goalie wants to make sure that wherever the puck goes he or she is square to the puck, this means that your skating ability must be superior especially when you get to playing a higher level of hockey.

Now that we have established that the goalie absolutely needs to be able to skate well, we can now go into more detail about goalie skates and why they are important. The goalie skate has a much different blade than the forward skate, it is very flat and the rocker is very different. Also the hollow to get goalie skates sharpened at is also much different than normal as well. 3/4″ hollow is what worked best for me in my goalie playing days, but you will just need to test out a few different hollows to find out what will work best for you. The reason why the blade is setup so different from the typical hockey skate blade is because the goalie needs to be able to shuffle. Shuffling is basically moving laterally, or side to side. If you can’t move laterally, you will never be a good goalie. The specific way that goalie skate blades have been engineered is to allow the goalie to easily move from side to side and transition from shuffling to skating and back to shuffling.

If you are new to goalie, make sure that you are purchasing your first pair of goalie skates from a hockey shop with someone who has knowledge of the position of goalie. If that isn’t possible, you will definitely want to do plenty of research online to see what goalie skates will work the best for you.
